Vapor Formula board (2009) + mb-fins

Postby Marco Bal » Sun Apr 18, 2010 4:48 pm

has anybody got experience with the Vapor Formula board + light winds (12 mtr) + mb-fins?

I am looking for a good light wind Formula fin + 12 mtr and 8-11 knots. I find the Vapor board quit difficult to get going in light wind.
Last time I have tested a 83 cut down, and that worked ok. I had the mast track all the way to the back, and boom high. Later on moved the mast track a little to the front, because the board looked like it was going up and down too much.

I saw the website of MB fins and had contact with them. It look likes the FTF-L K0 is the fin I am looking for.

Has anybody has experience with this brand + Vapor board?

With higher winds I am extremely happy with this board, it's fast and easy to controll. But I bought it for TOW during light winds.

HI Marco,

Im using Z fins 70 , 72 , and 74 on this board and it gives me plenty of lift in the light winds with the 12M normally enough and best with 70 only.
From what you write It seems like you have a good feel and you are doing the correct tuning with your mast track and so on.
I think that you should be able to have plenty of power out of the board I find the planning great with the 12M!
Make sure you put allot of downhall on that beast so it will not be top heavy and push the board down.
Dont know about MB fins so cant help you with this sorry.. just have to say that normally if I dont know it means that didnt see any one fast on them so..

Hope I could help,
Arnon.

Marco

if neither Arnon or myself have heard of these MB the chances are you are better off going for something else. I use only kashy but i know they are a little on the expensive side, so i would recommend finding out more about the Z fins that Arnon uses, these seem to be really good and the price is much more reasonable. Also there is IFJU formula fins but i have not tried them personally.

If you know the guys from MB fins, if they would like either Arnon or myself to try them out, we would be more then happy to test them.

Hi Ross,

What size(s) of Kashy do you use under the Vapor board in light winds ? 74/76/78/80 ?

Thanks,

Jeroen

Hi Jeroen,

I wouldn't go that big unless you weight around 100kg

Also depends if it's a XS or XXS Kashy but 72-74 should be ok for the light winds.

The new board is pretty powerful you don't really need that big fins for it.

Also there are new polish fins calles The Virus Fins. They're white so pretty easy to see in that Kashyland. They seem to work pretty nice epecially the 70cm with the 11m

Hope I was some help

All depends a little bit if you have one of the first (2009) Vapor boards, or a version a bit later. There were some differences in the mould.

I have tested a 83-70 cut down some weeks ago. The board don't really need that.

A lot of "new" brands are coming on the market. Almost every windsurf minded country have there own fin producers. Guys who started of in the garage, experimenting with new shapes, or copying excisting shapes and try to improve them.
Z-fins, VMG, Kashy, Virus fins, MB-fins, Ifju, Select, Deboichet, Boss, Busca, F4-fins, Hurricane, Drake ....

I have ordered a Busca fin myself. This is a dutch guy who is making fins, there are a lot of dutch guys who are using them now.
I have ordered a 80-70 cut fin. Not too soft, I still want to have controll on the amount of lift. Sometimes I get the idea that soft fins indeed give a lot of lift, but that the amount of lift is difficult to control. It is "built in". While if you take a fin that is only soft in the tip (let's say, 30cm of the 70cm), and the rest is a bit more stiff, I like those more.

yeah for sure i does depend a little bit on the board but not that much really.
80 is for sure too big it's more like a shovel than a fin ;) but really a lot depends on your personal settings some people like those huge fins, but I guess the 80 is generally to big.

I know there's a lot of brands, but from what we managed to test or we heard someone tested against the Kashy which is probably the leader, looks like Z-Fins and Viruses are amking the top 3 alongside Kashy. That;s why I write about those fins. I didnt test the Busca so cant say anything about it.

With the tip the general feeling is more about reflex the stability of bend. If a fin bends just on the tip it can really give you unwanted power in an unwanted moment like rounding the downwind mark and going back upwind. and if u fly away that moment your race can be over. that happened to me a lot with the Deboichet R20 even if the fin was good in general testing. So some aspects you'll only see in the real deal racing. In contrast the Kashy and Virus are really stable, bend in a predictible way and you can really put all of your downwind speed into that huge porttack which can make you advance or loose even 5 places in a big event
